Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know about internet speed tests, accuracy, and troubleshooting.

Why is my upload speed so much slower than download?

This is normal for most home connections. Cable (DOCSIS) and DSL technologies are designed to be asymmetric — they allocate more bandwidth to download because most users stream and browse more than they upload. If you need fast upload for streaming or cloud work, consider a fiber plan with symmetric speeds.

Why do I get different results each time I test?

Speed fluctuates due to network congestion, Wi-Fi interference, background downloads, and server load. For the most accurate reading: connect via Ethernet, close other apps, test during off-peak hours (2-6 AM), and run 3 tests to get an average.

Why is my speed test result lower than what I pay for?

ISPs advertise "up to" speeds. Actual speeds depend on network congestion, distance from the exchange, Wi-Fi signal strength, and router quality. If you're consistently getting less than 70% of your paid speed on a wired connection, contact your ISP — there may be a line fault.

Does Wi-Fi affect my speed test results?

Absolutely. Wi-Fi adds latency, reduces throughput, and introduces jitter. Walls, other electronic devices, and neighboring networks all interfere. For an accurate test of your actual internet speed (not your Wi-Fi speed), use an Ethernet cable directly to the router.

What's a good ping for gaming?

Below 30ms is ideal for competitive games. 30-60ms is fine for casual gaming. Above 100ms, you'll notice lag in fast-paced games. Ping depends more on your physical distance to the game server and routing quality than on bandwidth.

Is this speed test accurate?

PingMeter tests your connection against Cloudflare's global edge network, which has servers in 300+ cities worldwide. This gives you results comparable to major speed test services. For the most accurate reading, test on a wired connection with no other active downloads.

How much speed do I need for Netflix/YouTube?

Netflix recommends 5 Mbps for HD (1080p) and 25 Mbps for 4K Ultra HD. YouTube is similar: 10 Mbps for 1080p, 20+ Mbps for 4K. If multiple people stream simultaneously, add up the requirements per device.

What causes high jitter and how do I fix it?

High jitter is usually caused by Wi-Fi interference, an overloaded router, or ISP network congestion. Fixes: switch to 5GHz Wi-Fi, move closer to the router, restart your router, or use Ethernet. If jitter persists on a wired connection, it's likely an ISP issue.

Does this test use my mobile data?

Yes — the test uses whatever connection you're currently on. If you're on mobile data, it tests your cellular speed. If you're on Wi-Fi, it tests your Wi-Fi connection. Be aware that the download test uses approximately 100-300 MB of data depending on your speed.

Why is my ping high even with fast download speed?

Ping and bandwidth are independent. You can have 1 Gbps download but 200ms ping if you're far from the server, using satellite internet, or routing through congested paths. Ping is about distance and routing quality, not speed capacity.
